    A study of basic fingering, bowing, care, and pedagogy of the violin and viola. Intended for instrumental music education majors.

    Students will develop basic note and chord reading skills on the guitar. Includes right and left hand technique, sight-reading, transposition using a capo, accompaniment patterns and elementary popular music guitar repertoire.   • MUS 064 - Guitar Class 2


    1 credits
    Students will develop basic and intermediate note and note-picking skills on the guitar. Includes right and left hand technique, sightreading, and solo and collaborative guitar repertoire. This class may be taken before or after Class Guitar 1, which focuses on the use of chords in guitar playing. This course may be substituted for one semester of MUS 163 . Open to non-majors on a space available basis.

  • MUS 068 - Chamber Music for Mixed Instruments


    1 credits
    Chamber Music for Mixed Instruments explores chamber music from trios through octets, primarily art music composed over the past 300-400 years. Music appropriate for the configuration of each group will be chosen and coached by the instructor. Students will be expected to master 4-5 masterworks over the course of the semester, and will perform in the ensembles concert. Other performance venues will be determined as appropriate. This course satisfies one credit of the small ensemble requirement for music majors. Open to non-majors

    The development of basic music reading skills at the piano keyboard. Includes technique, sight reading, basic keyboard harmonization, improvisation, accompaniment and elementary piano repertoire. This course is designed for students who have no prior piano experience. It is also appropriate for students who have had up to two years of prior piano lessons but who wish a thorough review. May be substituted for one semester of MUS 182 .

  • MUS 087 - Organ Class


    1 credits
    The development of fundamental organ playing skills. This includes the basic fundamentals of organ keyboard and pedal technique, registration, organ repertoire, hymn and liturgy accompaniment, improvisation, and the accompaniment of congregational singing. May be substituted for one credit of MUS 181 - Organ Lessons . Open to non-majors.
    Prerequisite(s): Ability to play four part chorales such as those found in Christian Worship or any standard Christian hymnal

  • MUS 088 - Advanced Piano Class 1


    1 credits
    The course is open to non-majors, but is also designed to meet the needs of music majors. The course is designed to develop advanced piano performance skills. As with MUS 182 , each student will develop the ability to apply theoretical music knowledge to the practical application of performing music at the piano. This class may be substituted for one credit of MUS 182 .

  • MUS 100 - Music Appreciation


    3 credits
    A survey of the basic rudiments of music making and a survey of the history of music. Intended for non-music majors.

  • MUS 101 - Music Fundamentals


    3 credits
    This course will provide instruction in the fundamentals of music theory and aural skills including: pitch notation, rhythmic notation, clefs, scales, intervals, chords, sight reading, ear training, and basic keyboard harmonization.

  • MUS 105 - American Popular Music


    3 credits
    This course will survey the history of American Popular Music from its roots in Minstrelsy and Vaudeville, through Tin Pan Alley, Blues and Country, and Rock and Roll to the performance practice of today’s post-rock popular music. Topics of discussion will include the interplay in the 1960¹s between art music and rock music, as well as the cross influences of various genres on each other.
