This major is a four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The degree is structured as a 2-plus-2 program. The first two years are conducted at WLC, where general education and pre-professional requirements are completed. The second 2 years are completed via an accredited, hospital-based partner program though Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center or Froedtert. (Please note: completion of the courese work at WLC does not guarantee admission into the clinical traning program.)
To declare a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Major:
Major credit requirements:
- At least 36 core credits (plus electives) to be completed at WLC with a minimum of a “C” or better & minimum 3.0 GPA, plus 60 additional credits from a clinical training placement
- At least 15 credits in residence of 300 level or above courses (will be completed via clinincal training placements)
To be competitive, a 3.0 GPA is recommended and a C or better is required in MAT-117 (or a higher MAT course), COM-101, PHY-151, NUR-405, BIO-225, 255, 323, and ENG-101. Students that are not admitted into a clinical training program at a partner school of sonography will need to declare another major and complete all of the general education requirements (including all four theology courses) in order to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from WLC.

- Note: Those who are accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program are only required to complete two theology courses to meet the general education theology requirement

Core Courses (36 credits)
At least 3 additional credits from the following:

Patient Care Experience
The following elements are criteria assessed on individuals’ applications to the 2+2 program, demonstrated experiences in providing patient care:
- 100 or more hours of direct patient care as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Must provide evidence of current Wisconsin Department of Health Services Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry. CNA experience may occur in either a hospital or nursing home. CNA training hours do NOT count toward the minimum hour requirement.
- 8 or more hours of job shadowing a Medical Sonographer. Verification of job shadowing should “include the name of the facility where the shadowing occurred, total number of hours and be signed by the sonographer who provided the shadowing experience.” https://medicalprofessionals.aurorahealthcare.org/meded/programs/sonography/shadow.asp
- Verification of patient care experience
- Current CPR certification
Required Clinical Experiences
Campus Residency Statement
Students are exempt from the residency requirement during their clinical internship (years 3 & 4) for the Radiologic Technology & Diagnostic Medical Sonography majors | (year 4) for the Nuclear Medicine Technology. If students wish to live on campus during their clinical internship, they may apply through the Director of Residence Life.
Students who choose to live off-campus during their clinical internship are encouraged to continue participation in a wide range of campus events (athletic competitions, chapel services, guest lecture series, musical concerts, plays, and other social events). However, they will not be eligible to participate in intercollegiate sports due to scheduling conflicts nor will they have access to on campus health services or IT support as they will no longer be charged student support or health fees.
For the vast majority of students, tuition and scholarships will remain unchanged during clinical internship training; however, students that receive tuition remission (i.e. children of faculty/staff at WLC) will be asked to pay a minimum of $7,500 per year tuition.
