The “Wild West” has played an important role in the development of the American psyche and culture. It has become a symbol of the United States across the world. The West sees the intermixing of several diverse cultures–Native American, African American, Asian American, Hispanic and Anglo. This course deals with key individuals, groups and events that have become legendary to Americans, from gunfighters to the Little Big Horn, from Billy the Kid, Jesse James and Geronimo. This course will study the west as it was and how it is viewed in our cultural memory.
